Should You Start Monetizing Your Blog?

A common question bloggers ask is “when should I monetize my blog?” That’s a great question, because believe it or not, monetizing your blog is not for everyone! The right time to monetize your blog is after you’ve laid the groundwork, which means making sure your website is user friendly and contains helpful content.

You know you need to monetize, but before you do that, you need a plan. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

  • Do I know who my target audience is?
  • Do I know how my blog solves their problems?
  • Are those problems people are actively looking for solutions for?
  • Does my blog content address those felt needs and resonate with my readers?
  • Do I convey my message well throughout my blog?
  • Do I have the right tools in place to help me create content?

If you said yes to all of those things, keep reading to learn a few ways you can monetize your blog.

Affiliate Marketing

What is affiliate marketing? Affiliate marketing is the process of earning money (commissions) every time you promote a company’s products or services and drive a sale.

As a blogger, you promote companies and products that relate to your niche and incorporate links to those products into your blog content. You can also use your affiliate marketing links in other communications such as social media and newsletters.

If you are new to affiliate marketing, here are a few affiliate programs to consider signing up for.

  1. Amazon Affiliates– for this one make sure you have enough page views as you do have to get a certain amount of qualified sales within the first few months.
  2. Click Bank– this is completely open to anyone, making it a valuable affiliate platform to consider for your success.
  3. Commission Junction– also known as ‘CJ’, this affiliate program is a network, rather than an e-commerce store.

Not sure what you should be an affiliate for? Go to Google and type in ‘your niche’ affiliate programs to view a list of affiliate programs that relate to your blog. You may be surprised at how many there are!

Ads create passive income

Sponsored Ads

Sponsored ads come in various forms and can be a good way to monetize your blog. There are many different types of sponsored ads, and it’s important to do your research and decide what is best for you.

Google Adsense is probably the best option if you are just beginning to monetize your blog as it is easy to set up. This allows Google to place ads throughout your website, and depending on the placement and traffic to your site, you can receive compensation for the amount of views and clicks.

Another popular sponsored ad type is pay per click advertising. This is one of the most common models of internet advertising. It simply means an advertiser will pay you once someone clicks on their ad. There are many companies that offer this service and it can be a great way to generate income especially if you have a lot of monthly blog traffic.

Physical Products

Physical Products can be a great way to generate income for your blog, but also probably require the most work. Examples of physical products include tshirts, mugs, stickers, journals, etc. This can either be merchandise relating to your brand or products that are helpful to your audience.

Luckily, there are many ways to outsource physical products, helping you not to have to keep any stock of your items at home. Dropshipping is probably the most popular way to sell physical products on your blog because the supplier fulfills the order on your behalf. It can be a lot of work in the beginning to create your products and get everything set up, but is definitely worth it if you market the products in a way that peaks your reader’s interest!

Digital Products

Digital products are offerings of services or experiences (think digital downloads, eBook, courses, templates, etc.) As you create more blog content and start to grow your online audience, selling a digital product on your blog should be a monetization strategy that you seriously explore.

When considering what to create as your digital product, consider what your audience would find beneficial. For example, if your audience is social media managers, they may find digital templates for social media graphics useful.

Here is a list of ideas of the types of digital products you can create:

  • Courses
  • Worksheets
  • Calendars
  • Tutorials
  • LIVE Workshops
